TIKTOK AND WECHAT BANNED IN USA
The two Chinese applications are the subject of accusations of espionage for the benefit of China, for the moment unfounded. TikTok, in particular, was supposed to find an American buyer.
Negotiations flounder and the sanction is radical. In the absence of a definitive buyout agreement by an American company, the Chinese TikTok application can no longer be downloaded in the United States from September 20. WeChat, another hugely popular Chinese app, suffered the same fate.
More specifically, a decree from the American government will prevent the application stores of Apple (the App Store) and Google (the Google Play Store) from including these applications among the services to be downloaded. This ban should not, however, apply to the French versions of the App Store and the Google Play Store. According to a statement from the United States Department of Commerce, the ban on the distribution of TikTok and WeChat only affects the United States. These same applications will continue to work in the country, for those who had already installed it on their smartphones. However, they will no longer be able to benefit from updates.
According to the document, heavier penalties are planned for TikTok from November 12. On that date, the application will no longer be able to use an American hosting service or be based on elements of computer code from the United States (such as those from Google or Apple, for example). At this time, it is the very functioning of the application that could be called into question. These sanctions will take effect for WeChat on September 20.
Speed up negotiations
The ban on TikTok can still be canceled by the US president before entering into force this Sunday evening, provided that the parent company of the application, ByteDance, finds an agreement with an American actor. The IT company Oracle is in the running to forge a “strategic partnership“, the contours of which remain to be defined, with the Chinese group.
TikTok has nearly 100 million users in the United States and is proving very popular with young American users. WeChat, for its part, has over a billion users worldwide.
