Switzerland is adopting a “China strategy”. It was presented on Friday in Bern by Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis. “There is nothing revolutionary,” explained the head of the Department of Foreign Affairs. The novelty is that we make our positions explicit and that we coordinate our approach ”between the seven federal departments. This means, specified the minister, that the question of human rights, for example, is no longer reserved for its only department but that it must be integrated in all bilateral discussions. This coordination allows for “a quieter confrontation” with China when there is a disagreement.
