In Switzerland, agriculture has a constitutional mandate. It is supposed to supply the population with food while preserving the essential bases of our existence and maintaining the rural landscape.

For this, farms receive billions of subsidies, which are among the highest in the world. In return, the Constitution stipulates that production must be “in accordance with nature and respectful of the environment and animals” and protects the environment from damage caused by the excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers.
