The organizers of the Gonet Geneva Open announced Sunday the participation of Roger Federer in the tennis tournament of the ATP 250 category which will be played on the clay courts of TC Genève Eaux-Vives from May 15 to 22. If Federer confirms his entry, it will be his first participation in an event once won by Björn Borg, Mats Wilander or Marc Rosset and then, after his resurrection in 2015, by Stan Wawrinka.
Long dreamed of by the organizers, the coming of Roger Federer to the Parc des Eaux-Vives was made possible this year by the one-week delay of Roland-Garros (now from May 30 to June 13), which reduces by as much the season on grass. Roger Federer, whose main goal is Wimbledon, must play matches to get into the rhythm, including on clay. He has not played since the Doha tournament in early March and should make his comeback at the Masters 1000 in Madrid (May 3-9). Last week, he pulled out of the Masters 1000 in Rome (May 9-16), which reignited speculation about Geneva.
It only remains to hope that it will indeed come and that the public can benefit from it in one way or another. “This choice of Roger Federer fills us with happiness, indicates Thierry Grin, the director of the tournament, in a press release. It also places us in front of our responsibilities: to make this edition a total success despite all the difficulties linked to the exceptional health situation that we are experiencing. ”
