Job objective:

Take the lead in policies and research projects related to animal experimentation in order to support PETA’s advocacy for animals used in experiments in France

Remotely, preferably based in Belgium, but UK is also an option

Reports to:

Science Policy Manager

Main responsibilities and tasks:

  • Independently research and interpret a variety of scientific, political, political and other issues related to animal experimentation in order to advance the goals of PETA
  • Network and coordinate meetings with key decision makers and other stakeholders
  • Collaborate with the Director of the Department of Science and other science policy advisers to decide and obtain the information necessary to prepare fact sheets, reports, correspondence and other documents
  • Collaborate with other departments of PETA and its subsidiaries, including the regulatory testing department and the laboratory investigation department of PETA US
  • Build relationships and maintain communication with key audiences, especially decision makers in the legislative and administrative arenas
  • Lead meetings with parliamentarians, businesses and legislators and make presentations at conferences
  • Develop expertise in non-animal testing methods and leverage the expertise of others
  • Respond to correspondence regarding animal testing issues
  • Perform analyzes of technical articles and legislation and translate scientific and legal terminology into lay terms for use in research projects
  • Identify opportunities to provide public comments that encourage non-animal testing approaches and take the lead in writing and presenting such comments
  • Represent PETA in public speaking, debates, media and the general public
  • Communicating PETA’s philosophy to the public
  • Perform any other task assigned by the supervisor
  • Perform all tasks in English and French

Qualifications:

  • Diploma in a related field
  • Fluency in spoken and written French and English (essential)
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the functioning of the European Parliament, the European Commission and the French government
  • Knowledge of the use of animals in laboratories, associated French and European legislation and alternatives to animal testing
  • Experience related to animal testing issues and policies in France, preferred
  • Proven ability to stay abreast of relevant political, social and economic developments
  • Proven ability to inform colleagues and other relevant stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct in-depth research
  • Excellent proven writing and research skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, exceptional organizational skills and the ability to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Proven ability to make sound and independent judgments
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups of scientists, parliamentarians, industry representatives, the public and other stakeholders
  • Exceptional public speaking and networking skills
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times
  • Willingness and ability to travel, as required
  • Professional appearance
  • Support of PETA philosophy and ability to defend PETA positions on issues in a professional manner
