Glowing embers at RTS

Spread the love

Six months after the publication of the survey carried out by three journalists from Time, the SSR announces the results of the partial reports triggered following this publication. Verdict: apologies, recognition of acts of harassment in two cases, shortcomings, several departures. The investigation does not find a criminal offense on the part of the former presenter Darius Rochebin. It does not invalidate any of the elements published by Time concerning him. The RTS announces that it will be transformed in depth. A change that will have to be led by the current team, with the exception of two executives, who “have not committed serious mistakes”, in the words of the director, Pascal Crittin.

The wait was long and the crisis swelled. Nearly 230 anonymous testimonies following the line opened by the management of the RTS, speaking on social networks: the discussion about the corporate culture took place with all the difficulty inherent in the exercise . The internal battle unfolded externally: witch hunts for some, just opening the dialogue for others, the conversation is far from being fluid and easy because the subject is tough. Such an earthquake can affect any business.

The political stake

The identity crisis is coupled with a lively debate on the place of activism within the RTS. The epicene language controversy, launched via a homemade video tutorial on the issue, has fueled the fire. Who would be the RTS to impose a change of paradigm, while it is financed by the license? Conversely, shouldn’t it just be setting an example and leading the transformation? And we thus arrive on the political ground, which one believed appeased since the rejection by 71% of the Swiss population of the No Billag initiative in 2018. Breath on the embers.

Chance of the calendar: four journalists from the Time were nominated on Friday by the Swiss Press Awards, including the three authors of the initial RTS survey, which represents important professional recognition. Time fully accepts the investigative work carried out by these journalists, based on nearly thirty testimonies. The first reports and recommendations concerning RTS and its dysfunctions are on the table. But the treatment of the 180 anonymous testimonies, announced by the end of June, leaves many questions open. There are still a few steps left before the reconstruction announced by the SSR and RTS on Friday in Bern.
