Should the nationality of a suspect, perpetrator or victim be made public? The question arouses a lively debate in Zurich, while the population is led to position themselves this Sunday on a UDC initiative requiring the systematic mention of nationality in the communications of all the police forces of the canton.

The practice has become widespread in Switzerland, where most police forces disclose this information, along with age or sex. The city of Zurich has been an exception since the municipal police chief from the radical left Richard Wolff decided in 2017 that the authorities would no longer mention a person’s nationality except at the request of journalists.
