Patrick Chappatte wins the Swiss caricature of the year 2020 award for “Planète Coronavirus”. Already awarded in 2012 and 2014, this is the third time that the Geneva designer has won this distinction.
“Planet Coronavirus” was published in the German magazine “Der Spiegel” on March 28, 2020 and the following month in the German-speaking newspaper “Nebelspalter”, the oldest satirical headline in the world to be published. We can also see it in the book of the exhibition, “Marqué par le corona” (Von Corona gezeichnet), prefaced by Federal Councilor Alain Berset, and released last December.
Chappatte is not jaded to receive prizes. “It crowns – no pun intended – 12 months of work marked by the haunting presence of this spiked virus,” he told Keystone-ATS. Never in my career, nor in that of my colleagues, have we thus known a single subject of drawing capable of swallowing up all the others. “
“And if we had to keep only one of my drawings, I would have chosen this one,” continues the designer from Geneva. Exactly, this eclipse of the earth by the dark star of the Covid. “
Gérald Herrmann in 3rd place
Second place goes to Christof Biedermann for “Das Boot ist voll” (The boat is full), published last July by the newspaper “Reformiert”. Gérald Herrmann won third place for “Davos”, released in the “Tribune de Genève”.
Due to the pandemic, the public did not vote this year, but 46 newspaper illustrators chose the winners. The exhibition could only be viewed online from December to February. This prize for the best caricature is traditionally awarded at the “Gezeichnet” exhibition, which is held every year at the Museum of Communication-Bern, say the organizers.
