A French system to monitor Swiss airspace

In the field of air defense, fighter jets have captured all the media attention in recent years. However, they are only part of the transformations at work within the army. Because to support the deployment of future fighters and the new surface-to-air defense system – whose respective manufacturers and models should be known in the “second quarter of 2021” – the radar systems without which nothing works will also be modernized. The contract for the latter has just been signed.

At the beginning of April, Armasuisse announced the following: “SkyView will partially replace Ralus and Lunas, subsystems of the current Florako airspace monitoring and control system, which dates from 2004.” Military jargon is undoubtedly one of the most opaque. What does this mean? First of all, that the Swiss administration has chosen the supplier who will modernize its radar system: it will be Thales. This decision took place at the end of 2019 but the parliament did not approve it until last September as part of the “message on the 2020 army”.
