In Italy, an architectural firm and a 3D printing company have joined forces for a project whose objective is to build an ecological habitat using natural and recyclable materials. A prototype has already appeared and its inauguration should take place very soon.

In 2019, the firm Mario Cucinella Architects and the company World’s Advanced Saving Project (WASP) began their collaboration. As the specialized site explains Inexhibit in an article from January 23, 2021, the objective was to develop a house with the name TECLA. However, the development of a prototype is underway as shown by the video at the end of the article. The inauguration will take place in spring 2021 in Ravenna (Italy).

TECLA distinguishes itself on two points, namely its manufacturing process, 3D printing, and the use of recyclable and reusable materials. We are talking about raw earth, a land that has undergone very little modification. This material, which men have used for a very long time in construction, is indeed making a comeback. with serious ecological arguments.

A high performance printing system

According to the founder of WASP Massimo Moretti, it is now possible to build a TECLA house with “one click”. And yet, the construction of the prototype is not easy. WASP uses its latest machine to the best of technology : the Crane WASP, its nickname being “The Infinity 3D printer”. As the name suggests, it is a modular 3D printing system capable of building endlessly. Its basic module has a print volume 6.60 m in diameter by 3 m in height. In addition, its modular nature makes it possible to add robotic arms in order to improve performance.

Usually construction 3D printers cover the entire area involved in construction. In the case of the WASP system, this is not a necessity. According to Massimo Moretti, printers may undergo reconfiguration. They can also move forward with a generative attitude depending on the growth and shape of the construction. In addition, by coupling several Crane WASPs, it is possible to cover a huge construction area.
